A Fan of the Vans!

Thursday I turned 23 years old and it was a wonderful-joyous day. I was able to visit both of my parents. I went to my favorite movie theatre (John Star in Troy, MI) to see Identity Thief. Then following that I was able to do some yoga at Living Waters in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI.  It was truly a day of peace and a remainder that I have people in my life that care about me.

Yesterday was my birthday celebration, which I keep fairly simple with a small group of friends at Buffalo Wild Wings. Of course I wore what I would consider fabulous accompanied by my high top leopard print flatform vans.  I felt like my look was interesting and fun but my friends would say otherwise. I was told I looked confused and my pregnant sister stated that she hated my shoes.  My motto in 2013 is simply “Haters Gonna Hate” which means do you and wear what you see fit. Life is too short to worry about others thoughts and opinions. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not upset with my friends and family for speaking their mind and letting me know how they feel.  But, I just felt the need to further state I don’t care what other people think about my outfits. I guess that is the purpose in having the fashion blog so I can vent about why my shoes are relevant or why I like them.

Despite the ongoing hatred the surrounded my shoes they are now a part of my wardrobe. And I must say that I am a fan of the glorious shoes. First off they are comfortable and warm which is perfect for this cold dreadful Michigan weather. The sneakers are also are stylish with the leopard print and thick black sole. I honestly don’t know why I went so long without them in my closet.

Fashion Construction (Don’t Give Up On Your Dream)

So I have stated before that I love fashion and I have wanted to be a fashion designer since High School. But constructing clothing is a lot harder than any imagineer could possibly fathom. I took a fashion design course last year this time and simply failed. Of course I was hit with the harsh reality that fashion design may not be my talent and I was crushed.  I was deeply saddened by this truth and it simply made me want to throw away my career agenda and find something else to do.

Well this semester I decided to give fashion construction another try. I figured I would try again for the salvation of my GPA but also because I really do want to learn how to construct clothing. I have a passion for fashion and constructing my own pieces will make it that much more meaningful.

Currently I am constructing a skirt with pleats and I must admit it is a headache.  I spent three precious hours in the fashion studio working on this skirt today but it is coming together nicely. The bright pink linen is magic with the formation of pleats and I can’t wait for the finished result.

The book we use in construction. “A guide to Fashion Sewing” by Connie Amaden- Carwford is a book written for champs. Anything you want to know about sewing is in this book.

McCall’s  M5591 is a pattern I bought last year and let me tell you it is extremely mind-boggling.

This is a combination of the skirt constructing process. It is a magical affair.

Thanks Obama!

February is the month of black history, love and my sweet birth.  Black history is the most important part of this glorious month after my birthday of course.  But I have to admit that this year’s February is particularly different from any other. “Why is it different?” you might ask.  Well, if you have crazy friends like me you would of noticed the funny instagram pictures of the Black firsts this year.  One of my favorites was; the first black man to ask for a DNA test; magical.

But beyond the hilarious ridiculousness that it happening on Intragram.  Obama is getting more recognition from me this year for being the first Black President of the United States. I remember the 2008 election like it was yesterday. It was an amazing moment in my life because 1) I’m black and 2) him being elected really met that everyone in America had an equal chance to be whoever or whatever they wanted to be.  It was extremely empowering I remember feeling so proud to be an American.

So my black history month tribute is a big thanks to Barack Obama. A heart filled thank you for being the first black president and having a beautiful first lady that has such amazing style to marvel. Michelle Obama is definitely one of my favorite style stars.  The reason I’m so in love with her style is because she wears some of the coolest designers like Alexander McQueen (RIP), Rachel Roy, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs and so much more.  Then to top it off, she wears each garment with such class and elegance, one can’t help but adore her taste.
